Question 1

Does your school or system have axioms that support creating a collaborative learning community that educates all students?

Our school doesn't have axioms about about curriculum. The only axioms we have that I can think of is:
All children can learn.
Learning targets need to be rigorous.
Learning targets need to be relevant to engage students in learning.

My school and district has many axioms that support a collaborative learning community contained within the vision and mission statements.
Our school mission statement lists the following beliefs

Beliefs—We believe in:
  • Aligning our beliefs and our practice to address the developmental uniqueness of the age group
  • Teaching, modeling, and exhibiting respect, support, and cooperation with students parents, colleagues, and community members
  • Providing a welcoming environment where all students and staff feel valued, and safe, and are treated with respect, dignity, and equity
  • Providing an engaging learning environment with high expectations, differentiated instruction, and purposeful, relevant learning
  • Being knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and passionate about our subject matter and student achievement
  • Modeling the characteristics of the life long learner by engaging in on-going professional development
  • Encouraging open lines of communication and providing opportunities for parents and the community to become an integral part of our students' learning
The district vision states
  • The Educational Community is responsible for setting high standards for student learning.
  • The Educational Community communicates and analyzes district, school and student expectations and achievements.
  • The Educational Community fosters individual and group responsibility.
  • The Educational Community promotes and holds individuals accountable for a safe and caring environment.
  • The Educational Community instills a lifelong desire for learning; recognizing this as an ongoing process.
  • The Educational Community develops student and staff ability to problem solve, make decisions involving creative and critical thinking, research, and application.
  • Our schools are adaptable and flexible in an ever-changing environment.
So, I guess when it comes to principles or axioms we have many that we are working toward as a collaborative community. Pat Moriarty

Yes, our school district currently has axioms in place that support creating a collaborative learning community. The one that most compares with Peter Olivia's axioms is curriculum change depends on people to implement the change.-Patrick

Cheryl - Our school has some axioms that they live by. They believe that all children can learn through the arts and develop a true passion for learning. They also believe that the Arts breaks down demographic barriers to create a collaborative learning community for all. Also, imagination, creativity and committment is at the soul of learning and success. I believe that these axioms work for our school. Really these ideals would work in all areas of a persons life not just in school. This school teaches kids something different. It teaches them to follow a passion and learn all that you can from it.
